As a full hybrid, it is able to run purely on electricity at speeds of up to 100 km/h and achieve an electric range of up to 3 km at a constant speed of 60 km/h. This is based on the exceptionally high-performance battery with lithium-ion technology.
The hybrid drive
The car is powered with the efficient 2.0 TFSI engine, which has received the “Engine of the Year”* award five times. The Audi valvelift variable valve control system makes the engine distinctly more efficient and at the same time increases its torque. In combination with the high torque available from the electric motor, dynamic acceleration is possible.

The electric motor combines efficiency and dynamism, and acts as either traction motor, generator or starter depending on the driving situation and performance requirement. The compact and particularly light electric motor is connected to the crankshaft through a clutch. This parallel hybrid concept ensures the available power is transmitted directly. The result: convincing drive-off performance and acceleration in just about every driving situation.
The battery system with lithium-ion technology
The lithium-ion battery determines the performance and operating radius of the hybrid drive train. It has two major advantages compared with conventional nickel metal-hydride batteries: its high energy density means greater power output and the compact construction considerably reduces its weight. Active battery cooling improves the availability of the hybrid system and prolongs its operating life. The Audi A8 hybrid is thus one of the first cars in the luxury class that is able to run purely on electricity with a lithium-ion battery for a certain period.

The Audi A8 hybrid is not yet available for purchase. It currently has not yet received the whole vehicle type approval and is therefore not subject to Directive 1999/94/EC.
